Born in 1991 into the Tay ethnic group of Northeastern Vietnam, Hà Lệ Diễm left her village at age 18 to study Journalism. She works as director, producer and cinematographer. “Children of the Mist” – her first feature-length documentary, tells the story of a teenage Hmong girl who walks the thin line between childhood and adulthood in the misty mountains of North Vietnam. The film was shortlisted at the 95th Oscars and won the Best Directing Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2021, among other accolades. The film had its theatrical release in Vietnam in 2023, successfully selling over 40.000 tickets.
As a producer, Lệ Diễm is also working on establishing a support network for independent Vietnamese filmmakers.
